M-80s are an American class of large powerful firecrackers, sometimes called salutes. [1] . M-80s were originally made in the mid 20th century for the U.S. military to simulate explosives or artillery fire.

M80’s – The original M80 was a military simulator that was sold as a firecracker. It contained two grams of flash powder and was responsible for hundreds of serious injuries due to its powerful blast. These items were banned by the CPSC in 1966, and made illegal by ATF in the 1970’s.

Many law enforcement agencies consider these explosive devices, commonly referred to as M-80s, M-100s, quarter sticks, cherry bombs, and silver salutes, illegal because they exceed the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's explosive weight limits for consumer fireworks.
