The upgraded armor protection allowed the M1109 to withstand 155mm artillery airbursts, a 12-pound anti-tank mine blast or a direct hit from small arms fire up to a 7.62mm armor piercing round. This series is the base for armament carrier varients.

The M1109 based on the M998A1 chassis, developed by O'Gara-Hess and Eisenhardt company, was the first up-armored HMMWV for the US Army as a Battalion Scout Vehicle. The aim was to provide protection against 7.62 mm armor-piercing projectiles, 155 mm artillery air bursts and small (1 lb) mine blasts.

The M1109 was introduced in 1993 after the need for an “up-armored” light utility truck was demonstrated in Somalia. The earlier models were made of composite material and had canvas doors. The lack of armor protection made them vulnerable to small arms fire and mines.

The new vehicle was called the XM-1109 Up-Armored Heavy HMMWV and was quickly evaluated by the U.S. Army and put into production as the M1109 Heavy Up-Armored Armament Carrier. Examples were sent to Bosnia to serve with U.S. Forces, which were impressed with the vehicle.

The resulting armored variant, designated the M1109, subsequently served in Haiti, Somalia, and in the early phases of US operations in the Balkans.
