It was one of several vehicles being fielded by the US Armed Forces in Iraq under the United States MRAP program. It is based on the RG-31, which itself is based on the Mamba APC, although it is roughly twice the weight of a RG-31.

Unlike the smaller RG-33 4x4 MRAP, the RG-33L 6x6 vehicle was produced in much larger numbers and variants. The base configuration vehicle was coined the M1232 RG-33L. M1233 Heavy Armored Ground Ambulance (HAGA) and M1239 Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Armored Utility Vehicle (AUV).

The MRAP is a Military Light Tactical Vehicle designed specifically to withstand Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks and Ambushes. Common features include an impenetrable armored Crew Survivability Capsule, seperation of fuel and powertrain from the crew and angular surfaces on the underside of the crew capsule to deflect blast waves.

The RG33 is a family of MRAP vehicles, available in several configurations including the category I 4×4, category II 6×6, the heavy armored ground ambulance (HAGA) and the special operations command (SOCOM) vehicle. BAE Systems manufactured three of the US Marine Corps' five variants of MRAP vehicles: the Caiman, the RG31 and the RG33.
