The duel between the M26 Pershing and Panther is one of the most famous of World War II, largely because Bates and his fellow cameramen captured it on film. Of course, thousands of tankers on both sides experienced similar close calls and were engaged in equally dramatic armored contests during the war.

Two prototypes with the existing Panther I turrets were ordered in 1944. By 1945 only one of them had been built by the MAN company. The Pershing was developed to fight heavy tanks, and was itself initially classified as heavy. After World War II it was re-classified as medium. A few saw combat in the closing phase of World War II.

The M26 did suffer from a very weak mantlet, however, with an 88 mm shell from a Tiger I’s KwK 36 able to go straight through. It would be even less of a match for the Tiger II’s KwK 43.
