The M2 medium tank, officially Medium Tank, M2, was a United States Army medium tank that was first produced in 1939 by the Rock Island Arsenal, just prior to the commencement of the Second World War in Europe. The M2A1 was the series production vehicle, only built to ten units in 1936, and equipped with a single turret. However, it quickly appeared that the Army wanted a twin-turret configuration, then favored by other armies. The design was changed, new turrets devised, which led to the mass-produced M2A2.

By June 1939, the prototype of the M2 Medium Tank was ready for trials, with a sloped hull wrapping a tall fighting compartment and a new 350 hp R-975 aviation radial engine. This M2 was limited to 18 deliveries, for evaluation by an US Army commission.

The result of all these changes was a modernized tank, indexed Medium Tank M2A1. It had a 400 hp Continental R-975E-C2 engine, which was a licensed copy of the Wright R-975. The mass grew to 18.7 tons, and the suspension had to be modernized.
