Beginning in mid-1944, M4A3 models of the Sherman adopted a newly developed Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS). [5] The HVSS system of an Israeli M51 Super Sherman tank. This type of a suspension system involved springing the pair of dual-mounted road wheels on each bogie against each other with a volute spring.

The HVSS suspension made it onto a lot of things built on the Sherman chassis as well. HVSS was also retrofitted onto older small hatch hulls used in Israel’s M50 and M51 Sherman tanks. The tanks were M4A1 and M4A3 models with the 76mm M1A1/A2 gun, probably from France. These Shermans were called Sherman M1s, regardless of what motor or hull they had. If they had HVSS suspension, they were called Super Sherman M1. Some of these tanks had an upgraded engines, probably late in their careers, and with Cummings diesels.

By late 1942 the Sherman was beginning to be introduced in the European theatre. It was upgraded in 1944, but the HVSS upgrade first appeared early in 1945.
