The M46 Patton is an American medium tank designed to replace the M26 Pershing and M4 Sherman. It was one of the U.S Army's principal medium tanks of the early Cold War, with models in service from 1949 until the mid-1950s.

At first glance, the M46 looked almost identical to the previous M26 Pershing, main US Heavy tank at that time. Both the M26s and the M46s were reclassed later as Medium Tanks, and properly speaking the last heavy tank ceased to exist after the only heavy tank battalion equipped with the mediocre M103 was deactivated in 1960.

The M46 Patton was an upgrade to the M26 Pershing heavy tank developed at the end of World War II. Many of its features reflected new design concepts, including a more powerful engine for better speed, agility, and an improved main gun for better firepower.
