2020年11月29日 · The other M60 variant used in Vietnam was the M60 Armored Vehicle-Launched Bridge (AVLB) based on the M60A1 chassis along side the M48 AVLB. 2023年1月9日 · AVLBs were upgraded with the diesel engine from the M48A5 beginning in the late 1970s, so the diesel vehicles could have either 3 or 5 return rollers. Improved cupolas with pivoting hatches were mounted with the diesel conversions.

2021年8月10日 · There was an AVLB bridgelayer that utilized the M48 chassis coupled to an Israeli bridge system as well as M48A2 and M48A2C models delivered from Germany. The United States delivered M48A3s to the nation as well.

The M48A2 AVLB bridge layer was based on the M48A2 but fitted with a scissors-type bridge. The M48A5 AVLB bridge layer of the modernized version, still with the same scissor-type bridge, lengthened to 60 feets.

The M48A2 hull received modified armored boxing around the taillights, an updated fuel delivery system, and a tank infantry phone (TIP). The gasoline engine was replaced with the AVDS-1790-2A. They remained in CONUS training use with the Army National Guard through 1979.

The M88 was an armored recovery vehicle capable of towing disabled M48s. And when an armored column encountered a river it could not ford, the M48A2 AVLB (armored vehicle-launched bridge) was called into action. Carrying a mechanically extended scissors-type bridge totaling 63 feet on its hull, the AVLB could span bodies of water up to 60 feet.
