The 7.62 mm M60E2 machine gun was developed by Saco Defense for installation in armoured vehicles, aircraft and boats. It is a solenoid-operated weapon and 80 per cent of the components of the standard M60E2 are interchangeable with those of the Saco M60 general purpose machine gun, which is the standard weapon of its type in the US armed forces.

In 1963, the M60 was upgraded to the M60A1. This new variant, which stayed in production until 1980, featured a larger, better-shaped turret and improvements to the armor protection and shock absorbers.
