In his new post, Drummond immediately set to work on a new class of tank engine, with the intensive suburban services from Waterloo in mind. They were developed from the Adams T1 and O2 classes with modified boilers and an increase in boiler pressure and cylinder size.

After moving to Bournemouth in December 1963 30053 was one of four M7 class locomotives to operate the last push-pull services on the Southern Region. The engines were employed on the Swanage and Lymington branches and the services to Ringwood and Brockenhurst. It was withdrawn from service in May 1964 but ran to Nine Elms at the end of June 1964.

These London & South Western Railway M7 0-4-4 tank locos were designed by Drummond, and built in two batches between 1897-1911. The Class eventually comprised 105 locos. The latter 50, originally classified X14, had longer fames with a noticeable overhang at the front end, and many of them were push-pull fitted.
