The M7 is a fairly large, and overweight gun, especially for use in tanks. It just didn’t fit in the M4 Sherman’s small turret and was too clunky to fit in the T23 turret, and that’s why the M1 series of guns came about. They did get it mounted in the M6 Heavy Tanks turret, but that tank only saw extremely limited production.
