In 1951 Ford Motor Company was awarded the contract to design a ¼-ton 4×4 truck to replace the M38 and M38A1 model jeeps. The M151 was developed to specifications and guidance of the U.S. Army's Ordnance Tank Automotive Command. Design started in 1951 and testing and prototyping lasted through most of the fifties.

The M825 was a modification of the standard M151A2. When the 106mm M40A1 was mounted on the M151A2 it became the M825, when mounted on the M151A1 , the vehicle was the M151A1C. Special training was necessary for drivers of the M151A1C and M825 as the center of gravity was higher than the standard M151, a vehicle already prone to rollover.

The M151A1C and M825 1/4 ton 4x4 vehicles are equipped with a 106mm recoilless rifle on an M79 rifle mount. To complete this mobile weapons system, provisions are made for carrying six rounds of ammunition and weapon tools.

The M151 Truck, Utility: 1/4 ton, 4x4 (MUTT) for "Military Utility Tactical Truck", was a cold war 4×4 military utility vehicle developed by Ford. It was reputed lighter than the Jeep with an empty curb mass of 1,100 kg to be airlifted.
