The M9 is a class of electric multiple unit railroad cars being built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries for use on the MTA's Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad. They entered service September 11, 2019.

Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng today announced that the LIRR’s next fleet of rail cars, known as the “M9” cars, will enter into passenger service tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019.

2025年3月12日 · The MTA Board has approved a contract with Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc., to design and build the next generation of rail cars for the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad. The MTA expects up to 676 cars will be assembled at Kawasaki’s plant in Yonkers and anticipates up to 1,500 people will be employed in New York State.

The Kawasaki M9 is type of electric multiple unit (EMU) that is being manufactured for the Long Island Rail Road. They are taking delivery of 202 cars that will replace the Budd M3 cars as well as allow for expansion coincident with the East Side Access project.
