A stop-pin threaded into the drive head holds the piston rod in place thus holding the piston point in place. Once the soil sampling probe has been advanced to the top of the sampling interval, the stop pin is released via extension rods. The stop-pin and piston rod are removed from the sampler by retracting the extension rods.
