If you brought Nurm with you, he will stay behind at Fred's Keep to wait for Jack. If you take it, you lose your swords, but Jack is safe. However, regardless Jack will save you from falling at the last battle of the Episode, thanks to his training with the Marsh-Hoppers.

However, Jack is able to understand most of the language, allowing him to communicate more effectively with villagers, including Nurm, who exclusively speaks in the language due to his vocal cords being limited to producing it.
