Background: The modified 5-item frailty index (mFI-5) is a concise comorbidity-based risk stratification tool that has been shown to predict the occurrence of adverse outcomes following various orthopedic surgeries.

The mFI-5 was an independent predictor for 30-day postoperative major or minor complications, readmissions, UTI, pneumonia, and unplanned intubation following elective ALIF surgery in adults over the age of 50.

The mFI-5 and the mFI-11 are equally effective predictors in all sub-specialties and the mFI-5 is a strong predictor of mortality and postoperative complications. It has credibility for future use to study frailty within the NSQIP database.
