2013年10月22日 · How can I tell if my ID plate belongs to my MGA? I have only a partial chassis number, how can I determine the proper number? All of this relates in one way or another to the relationship between the three primary serial numbers found on an MGA: the Chassis Number, Engine Number, and Body Number.

There is a body number on a stamped steel tag attached (should be spot welded) to the vertical firewall near the right side bonnet hinge. This does not match the Car Number on the large ID plate, and it is of little concern to anyone except a die hard concours fan, and there are precious few of those in the world.

The Chassis Number, or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), is the primary identification used by NAMGAR to register your MGA, and is most important. The Chassis Number will be found on a plaque on the horizontal firewall immediately in front of the the heater core (image above). It may also be found on the title.

If the chassis number does not match the Car No. tag, then you likely have a tag transplant. In that case you could order up a Heritage certificate for the chassis number, which would likely reveal the car to be originally a Coupe, more or less verifying that you have the wrong Car No. tag attached to your car.

You should be able to apply for a heritage certificate for your car which would give you all the information as to the date of manufacture and the original equipment. "There is a fine line between a "hobby" and "mental illness". Post them here & I'll decipher.
