MHRA felt that it would be a great idea to provide a major summer event for area rod and custom owners. The year was 1967 and MHRA initiated what would soon become a national pastime... rod runs. That first weekend drew only 17 cars but was considered a success. Each outing following that first run saw increased participation and greater events.

The Detroit Autorama, also known as America's Greatest Hot Rod Show, is a showcase of custom cars and hot rods held each year at Huntington Place in Detroit, Michigan, in either late February or early March. It is promoted by Championship Auto Shows Incorporated (CASI) and hosted by Michigan Hot Rod Association (MHRA).

The Road Knights are a Charter Club of the MHRA (Est. 1951) and have been continually involved in Hot Rodding, Street Rodding, Racing and Autorama. In 1987 it seemed the natural next step would be to put on a Car Show. The first show that was planned, organized and produced by The Road Knight’s, was a big success, and brought in 150 cars.
