It is designed to run at a top speed of 125 mph. As of 1.3.3, the maximum speed that a locomotive can achieve is 110 mph (Class 90 and Class 86/1), which means that the Mark 3 DVT cannot currently reach its top speed until a faster locomotive is introduced.

The Mk3 Driving Van Trailers (DVT) were built primarily for operation with the then new class 90 locos for push-pull duties on the WCML. Their use was eventually extended to the class 86 and 87's after these locos had undergone minor modifications to make them suitable for this role.

2016年5月3日 · The mark 3 DVTs were built for use with class 86, 87 and 90 locos on the West Coast main line, replacing mark 1 full brakes and being fitted with the Time Division Multiplex (TDM) multiple working system to allow push-pull operation.

The Mark3 DVTs were introduced by Intercity in 1989/1990 for use on daytime West Coast main line trains from London Euston, and soon became a familiar sight at Glasgow Central. Locomotives used were the then new Class 90s, older Class 87s, plus a few Class 86/2s.
