The locos were intended to run at up to 140 mile/h (225 km/h - hence the name IC225) with new Mk4 coaching stock in push-pull mode achieved by having a Driving Van Trailer (DVT) at the opposite end of the rake and a Time Division Multiplex (TDM) control system using dedicated screened through wiring.

These mods included changing the bogies' vertical and lateral dampers, alterations to the spring rates of the bogies and the fitting of inter-vehicle dampers.
The fatal accidents at Hatfield in 2000 and Great Heck in 2001 led to 11 coaches and one DVT being scrapped. All the remaining coaches were refurbished by Bombardier at Wakefield between 2003 and 2005, including new seats, carpets, lighting, plug sockets, Wi-Fi and various features to improve access for people with disabilities.

Built by Metro-Cammell for inclusion in the InterCity 225 sets, 32 Mk4 Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) were built with the bodyshell manufactured under sub-contract by Breda in Italy. Whilst they were designed to operate with Class 91 locomotives as part of the InterCity 225 set, Mk4 DVTs have also operated with Class 90 and Class 89 locomotives.
