The MLW RS-18 was an 1,800 hp (1,340 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by Montreal Locomotive Works between December 1956 and August 1968. It replaced the RS-10 in MLW's catalogue, and production totalled 351 locomotives, to eight customers.

2024年8月12日 · The RS18, produced by the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW), was a very successful design that left a significant mark on Canadian railroading. Based from Alco's RS11 in the U.S., the RS18 was built between 1956-1968 and part of the Road Switcher (RS) series.

The model RS-18 road-switcher locomotive, built by Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW), was the Canadian version of the Alco-built model RS-11 and was alike in most aspects externally and internally except for having a notchless feather-edge hood peak instead of the deeply notched Alco hood design.

2022年1月14日 · The diagrams below list the dimensions that are different from the RS-18; the underframe is almost identical between the models. The RS-10 shown represents CN #3074-3093 (RS-10S) as-built and with Type B trucks, as opposed to the RS-18 drawings representing #3677-3700 as modified and equipped with lightweight trucks.

rs-18 MLW also introduced the 251B engine in late 1956 and put the 12 cylinder 1800 hp version in the RS-10 carbody to produce the uniquely Canadian RS-11M (later renamed RS-18). CN purchased 131 units between 1956 and 1958 and numbered them 3615-3745 (MR-18b, c, d).

The MLW RS-18 was the successor to the 1,600hp 244-powered RS-10 which proved to be somewhat unreliable. There were no such issues with the 1,800hp RS-18, with its 12-cylinder model 251B diesel engine. The RS-18 was a model built only by MLW. The last two units should have been retired as of 06/22/98. A number of units was sold to other railways in recent time.

MR-18c 3684 MLW RS-18 1800 hp restored to its original paint scheme as built 1/1958 by MLW #82226. Built to operate long end forward as were all CN road switchers at the time, and equipped with 65 mph gearing, later modified to 75 mph.
