The EMD GP15 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between June 1976 and April 1983. Intended to provide an alternative to the rebuilding programs that many railroads were applying to their early road switchers, it is generally employed as a yard switcher or light road switcher .

MP sought a replacement for their aging GP7/9 fleets and EMD’s answer was the GP15-1. This engine was basically an MP15DC with a road-switcher body and “Dash Two” cab and front end. It was truly another multi-purpose unit for the MP; seen in all types of services.

Electro-Motive GP15 Diesels 1557, GP15-1, was built in June 1979, 787138-3, FN 787138-3, as Chicago & Eastern Illinois 1557. It became MP 1557 in October 1976.

The GP15 series was an early second generation light road-switcher based from Electro-Motive's successful MP15 line of switchers, produced between June 1976 and March 1982. It was designed as a low-cost option for railroads that needed to replace aging fleets of older, less reliable locomotives.

Number 1655 (2nd) was built in August 1981 (c/n 897919-11), delivered in Jenks Blue paint, repainted UP yellow with MP lettering on March 14, 1985, repainted to UP 1655 on July 14, 1993, and became UPY 655 on July 10, 2001.

The EMD (Electro-Motive Division) GP15 Series is a series or line of 8-12 cylinder, 1,500hp, four-axle diesel locomotives consisting of three models built between 1976 to 1983 with 368 built. A UP (ex-MP) GP15-1 wearing Mopac-style lettering following the 1982 UP-MP merger.
