The Zaō Mountains (蔵王連峰, Zaō Renpō), commonly called Mount Zaō, are a complex cluster of stratovolcanoes on the border between Yamagata Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. The central volcano of the group includes several lava domes and a tuff cone, Goshiki-dake, which contains a crater lake named "Okama".

Rising over 1,800 meters above the border between the Yamagata and Miyagi prefecture, Mt. Zao is not only one of the region’s most revered and sacred power spots, but also a popular destination year around for outdoor activities and ancient onsen baths.

On the Yamagata side, the hot spring town of Zao Onsen offers some of the country's most acidic thermal waters. In summer, the mountain attracts nature lovers with its spectacular Okama Crater, while in winter, Zao Onsen turns into a leading ski resort and one of only few places in Japan to see "snow monsters" (frozen trees).

Straddling the border between Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures, Mt. Zao is home to one of Tohoku's best ski resorts. The picturesque surrounding area is home to rejuvenating hot springs and delicious, locally produced cheese.
