The University of Maine mascot, Bananas T. Bear has been a part of the UMaine community since 1914. Bananas’ current caretakers are the fraternity brothers of Sigma Xi Chapter of Alpha Delta National and the former Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.

The black bear has been the university’s mascot since 1914 when a black bear cub, found on the slopes of Mount Katahdin and named Jeff, was brought to a football game with Colby College. UMaine won the game and the university had a new mascot.

2022年12月13日 · The Bangor Daily News wrote a feature article about how the University of Maine’s mascot switched between a moose and a bear in the early 1910s. Eventually, UMaine settled on having the black bear as its mascot, and Bananas T. Bear has now represented the school for over 100 years.
