Malian softly calls Malsum. The big dog comes over, looks straight into Malian’s eyes, and licks her hand. He nods his head, “as if to say, Yes that can be my name. I am here for you” (8) before returning to his spot on the driveway.

Malsum, a rez dog, shows his devotion to the Wabanaki community living on the Penacook reservation by fiercely protecting Malian and her grandparents from outsiders who might bring COVID-19 into the reservation, or take one of their community away.
