The Great Siege of Malta (Maltese: L-Assedju l-Kbir) occurred in 1565 when the Ottoman Empire attempted to conquer the island of Malta, then held by the Knights Hospitaller. The siege lasted nearly four months, from 18 May to 8 September 1565.

In the Siege of Malta (May–September 1565), the Knights Hospitaller successfully defended the island from an Ottoman Empire invasion, halting the Ottomans’ advance into the western Mediterranean.

The 1565 punitive campaign was successful, the Hospitaller headquarters was destroyed, the Knights of St John on Malta were largely dead or severely wounded and the Ottoman phased withdrawal decided in July and begun in the second week of August, was largely completed before the Christian relief force arrived on Malta.

In 1565, forces from Suleiman the Magnificent’s expanding Ottoman Empire launched an invasion to capture the island from the Knights Hospitaller, an order of military monks originally formed for service in the Holy Land.

The formidable Ottoman armada, under the command of Piale Pasha, with Mustafa Pasha as general of the land forces, to be joined later by Dragut's corsair fleet and that of Hasan Pasha of Algiers, arrived at the shores of Hospitaller Malta on 18 May 1565.
