Maracanaú is a municipality in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Its name comes from Tupi language and means "lagoon where maracanãs (red-shouldered macaws) drink", because of the presence of these birds flying over the lagoons in the city's area. Its area is 106.648 km 2 (41.177 sq mi), and its population is 229,458 inhabitants (2020 estimate).

Maracanaú tornou-se distrito de Maranguape em 1906. Maranguape conquistou o Distrito Rodolfo Teófilo (Pajuçara), que pertencia a Fortaleza, em 1938. O território passaria a integrar a cidade de Maracanaú com a emancipação que estaria por vir. O movimento de emancipação começou em 1953, com os tenentes Mário de Paula Lima e Raimundo de Paula Lima.
