The marsh harriers are birds of prey of the harrier subfamily. They are medium-sized raptors and the largest and broadest-winged harriers. Most of them are associated with marshland and dense reedbeds. They are found almost worldwide, excluding only the Americas.

The courtship of the marsh harrier is certainly a sight to behold - wheeling and tumbling through the sky, male and female partners lock talons in mid-air. Look out for this rare bird over reedbeds in East Anglia, Somerset and the South East.

The largest of the harriers, the Marsh Harrier can be recognised by its long tail and light flight with wings held in a shallow 'V'. It is distinguishable from other harriers by its larger size, heavier build, broader wings and absence of white on the rump.

The Marsh Harrier is a large and bulky bird of prey that feeds on small waterbirds and mammals, caught in the marshes around our eastern coasts. Made extinct in Britain by persecution in the 19th century, the current population has grown from a single breeding group in Suffolk in 1971.

The oldest known wild bird in the world, was 6½ years old (ringing recovery). Nesting: Invariably, Marsh Harriers nest on the ground in long vegetation. British Marsh Harriers have always nested in reed beds, although in Europe they nest in rank vegetation and even in agricultural crops.
