The Kingdom of Matamba (pre-1550–1744) was an African state located in what is now the Baixa de Cassange region of Malanje Province of modern-day Angola. Joined to the Kingdom of Ndongo by Queen Nzinga in 1631, the state had many male and female rulers.

Matamba, historical African kingdom located on the Cuango River northeast of Luanda, Angola. The kingdom was noteworthy in that it was frequently ruled by women. In 1630–32 it was conquered by Njzinga, ruler of the neighboring Ndongo kingdom, when she was expelled by rivals and their Portuguese allies.

The matamba, or monkey orange tree, Strychnos spinosa is indigenous to tropical and subtropical Africa. It produces, sweet-sour, yellow fruits, containing numerous hard brown seeds. Greenish-white flowers grow in dense heads at the ends of branches (Sep-Feb/Spring - summer). The smooth, hard fruit are large and green, ripen to yellow color.
