The Matanuska River (Dena'ina: Ch'atanhtnu; Ahtna: Ts'itonhna’) is a 75-mile (121 km) long river in Southcentral Alaska, United States. [3] The river drains a broad valley south of the Alaska Range eponymously known as the Matanuska Valley.

With the Talkeetna Mountains to the north and the Chugach Mountains to the south, the Matanuska River pours forth from the large Matanuska Glacier in a swift, freezing cold, torrent of Class II to Class IV whitewater for nearly 70 miles before it meets the sea where the Knik Arm of Cook Inlet reaches into the interior.

2025年4月6日 · Additional vulnerable locations near the active river channel may experience some flooding at this level west of the Old Glenn Highway in the Butte and near Sutton from Milepost 64 to 66. Residents are advised that for the past several years at both of these locations, the main channel of the river has been shifting closer to the bank.

The Matanuska River in south-central Alaska drains an area of 2,100 mi2 that includes portions of the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains (fig. 1). The river originates upstream of the Matanuska Glacier and is extensively braided throughout most of its course.
