Matthew Francis Doherty (born February 25, 1962) [1] is an American former college basketball coach best known for his time as head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team.

Director of Athletics Dick Baddour undoubtedly found his man when he reached out to former Tar Heel Matt Doherty. Doherty had started for three-plus seasons at UNC under legendary coach Dean Smith, winning an NCAA championship in 1982 while playing alongside James Worthy and Michael Jordan.
