The M1905 was the first machine-gun to be produced in Russia, although Maxim guns had been purchased from Britain and Germany since 1889. The M1905 was based on earlier German models, but incorporated some improvements, notably a lock (firing mechanism) which could be stripped and repaired in the field.

Early on Maxim m/1905 were equipped with gun-mounts which had large wheels (quite similar as used with field guns of that time) and often also had large steel shield. It was based to commercial Maxim-Vickers machinegun model introduced year 1901. Many of its parts had were made from bronze or brass, which effected both the weapons size and weight.
