The MBT-70 (German: KPz 70 or KpfPz 70) was an American– West German joint project to develop a new main battle tank during the 1960s. The MBT-70 was developed by the United States and West Germany in the context of the Cold War, intended to counter the new generation of tanks developed by the Soviet Union for the Warsaw Pact.

By the early 1960s, with the Cold War now well into its second decade, Western intelligence learned the Soviets were preparing a vastly improved version of their T-62 main battle tank with upgraded armor, three-man crew and an autoloading main gun.

Their main armament was the M68 105mm rifled gun (developed from the British Royal Ordnance L7). Though it became very clear that the next generation of Soviet tanks would have increased firepower and protection, and both tanks would be placed at a disadvantage by the new smoothbore gun in the T-62.
