Promoting diverse diets is key to improving nutrition of women of reproductive age and can support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the World Health Assembly global nutrition targets for 2030. To fill the gap of food-based indicators, FAO developed the MDD-W indicator, in collaboration with several partners.

The Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women of reproductive age (MDD-W) indicator is a food group diversity indicator that has been shown to reflect one key dimension of diet quality: micronutrient adequacy, summarised across 11 micronutrients.
MDD-W assesses the proportion of women 15-49 years of age who have consumed at least five out of the ten pre-defined food groups the previous day or night. It is an indicator of a diet's micronutrient adequacy, an important dimension of its quality.
It provides a new tool for assessment, target-setting, and advocacy. The Women’s Dietary Diversity Project (WDDP) was designed to respond to the need for simple yet valid indicators of women’s diet quality, with a specific focus on micronutrient adequacy.
Appropriate uses of MDD-W • MDD-W can be used as a proxy to describe one important dimension of women’s diet quality in national and sub-national assessments • Targets can be set and prevalence of MDD -W can be compared to previous assessments, so long as survey methods are consistent and timing accounts for seasonality
