The Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet is a rocket-powered interceptor aircraft primarily designed and produced by the German aircraft manufacturer Messerschmitt. It is the only operational rocket-powered fighter aircraft in history as well as the first piloted aircraft of any type to exceed 1,000 kilometres per hour (620 mph) in level flight.

Me.163B V18. For many years, William Green's 1971 book "Rocket Fighter", was one of the few on the market to give a detailed history of the Me.163. In it he describes how two Me.163s, BV6 and BV18 were modified to carry the new Walter motor with auxilliary combustion chamber.

Spurred by the outbreak of the war, the Me 163 was developed as a short-range, point-defense interceptor intended to protect critical high value targets. Designed for horizontal takeoff and landing, the Me 163 incorporated many innovative features such as a jettisonable take-off trolley and retractable landing skid.

The Me 163B took three minutes to climb to 37,000 ft. Powered flight duration was between 8 to 15 minutes, with a range of about 100 km.
