Trimethylsilyl chloride, also known as chlorotrimethylsilane is an organosilicon compound (silyl halide), with the formula (CH3)3SiCl, often abbreviated Me3SiCl or TMSCl. It is a colourless volatile liquid that is stable in the absence of water. It is widely used in organic chemistry.

Chlorotrimethylsilane is a chloro-organosilane compound mainly used for silylation reactions. [1] Chlorotrimethylsilane can be a non-toxic alternative to mercuric chloride as activator in samarium-promoted cyclopropanation of both allylic and α-allenic alcohols. [2]

Amines can be obtained from amides, nitriles, and nitroalkenes, alcohols from carboxylic acids, and sulfides from sulfoxides in good yields by use of the reducing agent LiBH 4 /Me 3 SiCl. Even α-amino acids can be easily reduced to amino alcohols with retention of optical purity.
