Beledi music is used specifically for a dance known as the Melaya Leff (pronounced ME-LIE-AH LEF). This dance is from Alexandria, Egypt. A melaya itself is a large, black shawl made of nylon or silk, in which the women wrap themselves completely from head to toe. It is a modesty garment for when they leave the house.

The milaya lef (winding sheet) is large black cotton wrap (over 3m long) that used to be worn by bint il-beled in Alexandria or old Cairo over normal clothes often with the mandil and bur'a. The garment was used for modesty, warmth and protection. Groceries could be stored in its folded pockets and small children could cling to it.

The melaya leff (meaning "wrapping sheet") is a mantle commonly worn in Egypt until the late 20th century, originally worn as a modesty garment throughout the major cities of Egypt. [1] Today it is frequently worn as part of dance costume and used as a prop during performances.

A traditional milaya lef consists to two lengths of black cotton fabric sewn along the long edge then wrapped about the body over normal clothing. It was worn by Egyptian urban women especially in Cairo and Alexandria until recently. It is held under the armpits at one end with the other end draped over the arm.

City women often worn a bur`a - a long rectangular face veil either of white cotton or open weave - and a headscarf (sometimes over a skullcap - taqiyah).

For public wear women would wear a Tob Sebleh which is basically a wide dress. In Alexandria and Cairo women would wear a Melaya Luf which is a large wrap that is used to cover up their body,warmth, and to carry things. The basic traditional garment for men is a Gallibaya which is just a long shirt. Trousers were sometimes worn under the Gallibaya.
