Quite a extensive line-up of different railways and engine models sits at IRM by the locomotive shop. Metra F7 308 sits by the IRM depot.

Metra 308 is a passenger locomotive known as a “cab unit.” It was built for the Chicago & North Western as freight locomotive 4083C and was used in general freight service.

Metra F7 305, ex C&NW 411, with sister 308 (Ex C&NW 414) handles a welded rail train on the CP C&M Sub at Morton Grove, IL 10-03-1993. Both F7's were later donated to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL which has seen Metra 308 restored to her former C&NW 1970's appearance and number 411.

Back in August in 1993, I was checking out the Amtrak yard south of Union Station. To the south, I spied what appeared to be a Metra engine heading north. I soon realized that it was not an F40PH or one of the newer F40PH-2Ms but Metra's last two F7 engines pulling a rail train.

The Chicago and North Western assigned F7's and E8's to its commuter service. Nearly all of those locomotives were replaced with Metra F40PH-2's in the early 1980's, while a few rebuilt E8's lasted on Metra until1989.
