USB microphone will have an maximum output voltage of 5V, so if the gain here is too high, sound might be clipped. In Windows 7, when you go to microphone properties, you can adjust the mic "level" from 0 to 100, and also mic "boost" in decibels.

'Gain' controls are typically used to get a good input level. So for example if you had a microphone with a very low output signal, you would boost the gain to get a better level into your mixing desk or audio interface. If you had a synthesizer plugged in you might need to turn the gain down to stop the signal distorting.

In particular, the lower you set the gain, the higher the effective noise level will be, because any boost later on will amplify not only the mic signal but also all noise introduced in earlier circuitry stages.

I have used plenty of microphones in live environments and what they need gain wise is always dependent on the specific make and models. You can't just grab a shure and an audix whether both condensed or not and expect the same performance.
