Grbac was rushed to the Reading General Hospital, having sustained a head injury, a broken right arm, several broken ribs and internal injuries. Mike died a month after an accident in the Schmidt's 200 race at the Reading Fairgrounds Speedway on 29 October 1978.

He succumbed to his injuries a month later in the hospital. He would be the last driver to perish as the result of a race at the Reading Fairgrounds Speedway.
