There, he received yet another Air Force Commendation Medal for the rescue of two German climbers stranded at 20,000 ft on Mt McKinley, suffering from severe hypothermia and cerebral edema.

In August of that same year he enlisted in the Air Force and upon completion of BMT and Technical School, he was assigned to the 1931 Communications Group, Elmendorf AFB, AK as an apprentice cable splicer.
