Oil drop experiment - Wikipedia
Millikan and Fletcher's experiment involved measuring the force on oil droplets in a glass chamber sandwiched between two electrodes, one above and one below. With the electrical field calculated, they could measure the droplet's charge, the charge on a single electron being ( −1.592 × 10 −19 C ).

Millikan oil-drop experiment | Date, Summary, & Results
Millikan oil-drop experiment, first direct and compelling measurement of the electric charge of a single electron. It was performed originally in 1909 by the American physicist Robert A. Millikan, who devised a straightforward method of measuring the minute electric charge that is present on
In this experiment you will use tiny droplets of oil. When these droplets fall under the influence of gravity it takes them only a few milliseconds to reach a terminal (constant) speed vf, where the downward force of gravity is balanced by the upward drag force from the air.

In this experiment you will experimentally determine the quantum nature of charge. Robert Millikan was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1923 for this brilliant experiment. A simplistic schematic of his apparatus is shown below. A spherical drop of oil, falling through a viscous medium like air, will quickly reach a constant velocity.
Millikan oil drop experiment - University of Oxford
In an important series of experiments in Chicago, Robert Millikan measured the charge on a series of oil drops. He did this by observing the time taken for a drop to fall at its terminal velocity under the influence of gravity between two fixed levels, this enabled him to deduce the radius of the drop and therefore the drag force operating on it.
Landmarks —Millikan Measures the Electron’s Charge
2012年1月20日 · Researchers now routinely isolate single electrons in quantum dots, but a century ago the state-of-the-art charge-trapping device was a droplet of clock oil. Robert Millikan’s oil drop experiment provided the first clear measurement of the fundamental electric charge and thus helped cement the notion that nature is “grainy” at the smallest level.
Robert Andrews Millikan constructed an experiment where oil was atomized (sprayed through a ne nozzle) to form tiny droplets between two oppositely charged parallel metal plates. Some of the oil droplets pick up one or more excess electrons while passing through the atomizer.
