Steam locomotive #1531 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925 (construction no. 58655), wheels 2-6-0, gauge 4' 8½". It worked at Central José Smith Comas and is still displayed there.

It is now believed to be the only regular working steam locomotive in Cuba. A reliable Minaz source advises that this former sugar industry museum still refines sugar, and uses a remaining exhibit: 1204, the standard gauge Rogers 2-4-2T to shunt their yard “occasionally”.

2003 was the last year for 'real' MINAZ steam working in the Zafra campaign? Well, no actually. 2004 has seen some steam activity, despite the most pessimistic forecasts. We visited various open, closed and demolished mills with the following results, between Thursday 19th February and Wednesday 3rd March. Many closed mills are being demolished.
