At the Mingsha dunes, you can throw yourself into experiencing the boundless desert in all sorts of ways. Run with bare feet on the soft sand, appreciate the sunset on the tops of the "mountains" (huge dunes), ride a camel, slide down the dunes, fly a glider, and more.

The sand mountain is famous for its flute-like sounds in the gale, thus its name Mingsha as "Loud Sand" in English. Accumulated by quicksand, it lies along the south of Dunhuang City like a sleeping dragon.

Unashamedly touristy but definitely worth a visit, and close to Dunhuang city, for the beautiful sand dunes and crescent moon lake which somehow never gets covered by sand. Activities include camel riding, hot air balloon, four wheel drive buggies.

The Mingsha (singing sands) are celebrated for the sounds they produce alone or when people walk on them. The tallest dune, known as Sha Jiao Mountain during the Eastern Han (25-220), rises to a height of 1,715 meters above the Dang River.
