Minox (pronounced / ˈmiːnɒks / MEE-noks) is a manufacturer of cameras, known especially for its subminiature camera. The first product to carry the Minox name was a subminiature camera, conceived in 1922, and finally produced in 1936, by Baltic German Walter Zapp. [1]

For nearly 40 years, the Minox was the go-to spy device for taking secret snapshots. Although it was created in Germany in 1938 as a commercial product, the CIA and KGB used the Minox until the 1970s. Its small size, high-resolution lens, flexibility, and large capacity (taking 50 photos without reloading) made it ideal for clandestine photography.

The Minox Riga was designed by Walter Zapp and was built by VEF in Riga (Latvia). It was in production from 1938 to 1943, right through WWII. Initially autonomous, then briefly under Russian control, followed by German occupation and finally under Russian control again.
