Two were built, later renamed Mirage I and II respectively: [1] Mirage I, the MD550-01 renamed. Mirage II, the MD550-02 renamed. The most successful line of Mirages were a family of supersonic delta-winged fighters, all sharing the same basic airframe but differing in powerplant, equipment and minor details.

Dassault was keen to produce a successor to the Mirage I prototype; at one point, the firm was considering the production of an enlarged version, known as the Mirage II, which would have been furnished with a pair of Turbomeca Gabizo turbojet engines. [15]

The Mirage III was designed to meet a French Air Force specification for a light-weight all-weather interceptor. The Mirage I was the prototype built for the contract. After initial testing a larger version the Mirage II was proposed but was replaced by the Mirage III with an improved engine before it was built.

The Mirage III was the first European combat aircraft to exceed a speed of Mach 2 in horizontal flight. The aircraft was developed to meet a French air staff requirement for a small, manned, supersonic interceptor with good armament, fast rate of climb and capable of operating independently of ground control.

However, the Mirage II was eventually canceled before the prototype was completed, and development continued with the Mirage III.
