The Maschinenkarabiner 42 (H) or MKb 42 (H) (machine carbine Model 1942 (Haenel)) was an early German assault rifle firing an intermediate round of World War II. Designed in 1940 – 1941 by Hugo Schmeisser working for C. G. Haenel Waffen und Fahrradfabrik, several thousand were made and the gun was used on the Eastern Front in 1943.

It used a long-stroke gas piston and a tilting bolt patterned after the Czech ZB-26 light machine gun. What makes the MKb42 (H) stand out from the later Sturmgewehr models is that it was an open-bolt design.

Despite the MKb 42 (W) showing better single-shot accuracy than the MKb 42 (H), it was ultimately rejected due to its questionable action; no further action was taken to improve the weapon's design as Walther was already having their hands full with delivering their P38 pistol to the German army.

2000年2月1日 · Mkb42 (W) Designed by Carl Walther as Zella Mehliss, incorporating a redesign of the earlier Walther A115 semiautomatic carbine chambered in 7.92x57mm. The redesign of the rifle for the 7.92x33mm Kurzpatrone was produced in vollserie with a field manual, but was rejected in 1942.

The ‘Maschinenkarabiner 1942 ‘ or MKb.42 (H) for short was the final result of a contract issued to HWaA (Hitler’s army Weapons command) in 1939. The formation of this weapon led to the creation of the successful Stg.44 ( MP 43/44), the world’s first ‘assault rifle’.

The Mkb 42 (W), and the more successful Maschinenkarabiner 42 (H) designed by Haenel, were predecessors of the Sturmgewehr 44 (StG 44) assault rifle.
