It is suggested that the soluble form of klotho originates from the proteolytic cleavage of mKL, and thus sKL has similar features with mKL. sKL also exerts its multiple biological actions in an FGF23-independent manner and can act as a hormone, showing its anti-aging, anti-oxidative, and anti-tumor effects [7, 11, 14, 15].
