The four main models to explain psychological abnormality are the biological, behavioural, cognitive, and psychodynamic models. They all attempt to explain the causes and treatments for all psychological illnesses, and all from a different approach.

In Module 2, we will discuss three models of abnormal behavior to include the biological, psychological, and sociocultural models. Each is unique in its own right and no single model can account for all aspects of abnormality.

There are essentially five different theoretical models of how to understand psychological suffering and what can be done to reduce it: biomedical, psychodynamic, humanistic–existential, cognitive–behavioral, and social and family systems.
