Hmong Americans (RPA: Hmoob Mes Kas, Pahawh Hmong: " 𖬌𖬣𖬵 𖬉𖬲𖬦 𖬗𖬲 ") are Americans of Hmong ancestry. Many Hmong Americans immigrated to the United States as refugees in the late 1970s, with a second wave in the 1980s and 1990s.

There were 327,000 Hmong in the United States in 2019, compared to about 150,000 in the 1990s. They are found mainly in Minnesota, Wisconsin and California and to a lesser extent in Michigan, Colorado and North Carolina. There are around 95,000 Hmong in California, 90,000 in Minnesota and 58,000 in Wisconsin.

California has the largest Hmong-American population in North America and Minneapolis metro area holds the densest Hmong-American population in the 48 contiguous states.

Since 1975, after the U.S. pulled out of South Vietnam, thousands of Hmong have moved out of Laos to seek asylum in many European and Western countries. About 230,000 Hmong are now living in the United States, with the majority living in the states of California (80,000), Minnesota (70,000) and Wisconsin (50,000).

The Hmong have settled in the US for over 45 years and since then have made major strides in terms of representation, social and political activity, and organization. This article aims to highlight nationally recognized Hmong-American individuals and organizations in the US in hopes of showing how far they’ve come since arriving as refugees.
